AI is Reshaping Industry. At 12% Adoption, Are Zimbabwean Manufacturers Ready?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the industrial landscape, enabling manufacturers to improve productivity, reduce waste, strengthen quality control and make faster, data-driven decisions. As global manufacturers accelerate their digital transformation, AI is becoming an increasingly important driver of competitiveness.
Zimbabwe's manufacturing sector is still at an early stage of this journey. The CZI Annual Manufacturing Sector Survey 2025 found that only 12% of manufacturers have adopted AI technologies, with financial constraints and limited technical skills identified as the main barriers to adoption. While the findings highlight a significant gap, they also point to a substantial opportunity for manufacturers to improve efficiency and build more resilient operations.
Recognising this need, CZI is supporting manufacturers to build the capabilities that underpin successful digital transformation. In partnership with DeepGenAI, CZI delivered a Lean Six Sigma programme that combined internationally recognised process improvement methodologies with data analytics and artificial intelligence. The programme equipped participants with practical tools to reduce process variation, eliminate waste, strengthen data quality and use evidence to drive continuous improvement.
For many businesses, the challenge is not introducing AI for its own sake, but creating the operational discipline and reliable data needed for AI to deliver meaningful results. Lean Six Sigma provides that foundation by improving processes before technology is applied, enabling organisations to realise greater value from digital investments.
As Zimbabwe's manufacturing sector looks to improve competitiveness in an increasingly digital economy, building capability will be as important as adopting new technologies. Through practical initiatives that combine operational excellence with emerging technologies, CZI is helping manufacturers prepare for the next phase of industrial transformation.
