Rural Industrialisation: Unlocking Growth Beyond Zimbabwe's Cities

Strong rural industries have the potential to create jobs, strengthen value chains and drive inclusive economic growth. CZI is exploring how this opportunity can be realised.

Industrialisation is often associated with cities, yet some of Zimbabwe's greatest opportunities lie in rural areas where agriculture, mining and manufacturing intersect. Large industrial businesses can stimulate local economies by creating demand for suppliers, supporting small enterprises, developing skills and encouraging investment in surrounding communities. Understanding how this happens—and what is needed to strengthen it—is the focus of CZI's Rural Industrialisation Study.

The study is examining how anchor industries can catalyse broader economic development in the districts where they operate. During the second quarter, CZI conducted field visits to Green Fuel and Tongaat Hulett in Chiredzi to understand how their operations support local value chains, enterprise development and employment. The research is also identifying barriers that limit rural industrial growth, including infrastructure gaps, policy constraints and challenges affecting local supplier participation.

The next phase of the study will expand to include Zimplats and Prospect Lithium, providing insights from different sectors of the economy. The findings will inform practical recommendations on how Zimbabwe can build stronger rural industrial ecosystems that create opportunities for businesses, communities and the wider economy.
